In Texas, Cody had come up with a plan to kill Kirk Hyena that would leave him avoiding having to make it past the estate’s defenses and guards.

It was based on his earlier idea to use Kirk’s passion for rare stamps against him, but Cody had refined it after talking to the caretaker, Antonio. The new plan should make Kirk eager enough that he would risk having a meeting without his army of protectors. Once that happened, his fate would be sealed.

Antonio had mentioned that the estate would be empty for two full days during the upcoming celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe Day. He had also mentioned that there was a large safe that belonged to Kirk Hyena. It seemed logical to assume that Kirk Hyena would keep his rare stamps inside that safe. It was also reasonable to assume he might leave them there while he visited his brother inside the bunker. Although Cody had to admit there was an even chance that he might take the stamps with him. If that was the case, then Cody would have to contact Spenser and arrange to use the lure of the rare 2-cent Hawaiian Missionary stamp.

That might work and it might not. As valuable and uncommon as the stamp was, it was still only one stamp, and Kirk Hyena had no emotional attachment to it. As for his own collection, it seemed a certainty he would go to lengths to have it back once it was taken from him.

Being an assassin, Cody knew little about breaking into safes, but he did know someone who might have general knowledge about such things; it was his brother, Caleb. Caleb also went by the name of Stark and was a thief who stole from other thieves. Caleb had been adopted by an ex-Los Angeles cop named John Knox and had grown up on a farm in California. The money he took from the thieves he robbed went towards funding a charity Caleb ran, and which benefitted teens who were headed down the wrong path.

Caleb, along with his adoptive sister, Sadie, had helped turn lives around and kept dozens of teens from going down a track that would lead them to spending a life behind bars. Cody gave him a call and asked for his help.
